Check the reason before the method

Tayammum is not a shortcut simply because a normal wudu is inconvenient. Lack of accessible water, or a genuine inability to use it without harm, can create a valid reason. The details of searching for water, illness, severe cold and an injury depend on circumstances. Ask about your actual situation rather than deciding from a single phrase such as “I am travelling.”

The Quran connects this concession with purification in 5:6 and 4:43. If water can be used safely and is available in the relevant sense, normal water-based purification remains the starting point.

Suitable material in Hanafi fiqh

The cited Hanafi answer permits clean earth and qualifying material of the earth’s surface, such as clean stone. Visible loose dust is not an absolute requirement for a clean stone in this school. A plastic tabletop or any convenient household object should not automatically be treated as earth-based material. If a surface is painted or coated, ask whether that particular material qualifies.

The wiping sequence

  1. Make the intention for ritual purification that permits the intended worship.
  2. Say Bismillah and place both hands on suitable clean earth-based material. Do not create a cloud of dust.
  3. Wipe the entire face with the hands.
  4. Place both hands on the suitable material a second time.
  5. Wipe the right hand and arm, including the elbow, then the left. Include fingers and the whole required area.

This is the Hanafi method, with arms through the elbows. Other schools differ on some wiping details. A written guide helps you remember the sequence, while a qualified teacher can demonstrate coverage.

What changes afterwards?

Events that invalidate wudu also invalidate tayammum. The return of a real ability to use water is also relevant: this concession depends on its reason continuing. If water becomes available, or a health restriction changes, ask how normal purification resumes in your particular case.

For a wound dressing or one injured limb, the answer may involve washing and wiping rather than treating the entire situation as identical to having no water. Give the scholar the practical details and follow medical advice about harm.

Common questions

Can I do tayammum just because I am outside?

Being outside does not itself establish a reason. The availability of water and a valid inability to use it must be considered.

Does a clean stone need visible dust?

Not under the cited Hanafi explanation. A clean qualifying stone may be used even without loose dust; other schools differ.

Do I wipe only my hands?

This Hanafi sequence includes both arms up to and including the elbows. Do not silently mix it with a different school’s method.
