Before you begin

Use clean, purifying water and a place where used water can drain. Remove a coating that stops water reaching an obligatory washing area, such as ordinary impermeable nail polish or dried paint. A stain that leaves no barrier is a different matter. Keep the tap modestly open; learning carefully does not require wasting water.

Form the intention in your heart. There is no need to learn a special spoken intention before you can begin. The legal status of intention and other details differs between schools; this page identifies the Hanafi minimum rather than presenting one school’s minimum as universal.

A practical sequence

  1. Begin with Bismillah and wash the hands to the wrists.
  2. Rinse the mouth and gently clean the nose. Do not force water or cause discomfort.
  3. Wash the whole face, from the usual hairline to the chin and across its width.
  4. Wash the right hand and arm, including the elbow, then the left. Include the fingers rather than starting above the wrist.
  5. Wipe the head with wet hands. Wiping the whole head follows the fuller sunna routine; the Hanafi obligatory minimum is a quarter. Wipe the ears as part of the sunna routine.
  6. Wash the right foot and then the left, including the ankles, heels and spaces between the toes.

Washing three times is part of the fuller routine for the washed limbs. One complete wash fulfils the washing minimum; wiping is not the same as washing a limb three times.

A missed spot is different from a doubt

If you can actually see a dry obligatory area, wash that area and ask a teacher if the circumstances need further clarification. Merely wondering after finishing is not evidence that a limb stayed dry. Learn the coverage once, use a steady routine, and avoid turning every sensation into a new inspection.

For a cast, wound, ongoing discharge, or a medical restriction, describe the circumstances to a qualified scholar. The rules for an excuse cannot be decided from a general checklist. Continue with the connected guides on wudu breakers and the supplication after wudu.

Common questions

Is rinsing the mouth obligatory in Hanafi wudu?

It is an emphasized sunna in wudu. In Hanafi ghusl, washing the mouth has a different legal status and is obligatory; do not transfer the wudu rule to ghusl.

Must I wash everything three times for wudu to count?

A complete single wash meets the washing minimum. The fuller sunna routine should still be learned and practised; minimum validity and the complete method are different questions.

Does my wudu expire after a fixed number of hours?

There is no hourly expiry. Wudu remains until an event that invalidates it occurs. A general feeling of uncertainty does not establish that event.
