Before wudu: begin with Bismillah
Bismillah.
Meaning: in Allah’s name. Learn this brief beginning without adding a special formula to every limb. A list of attractive-looking Arabic phrases is not, by itself, proof that each phrase is a prescribed wudu supplication.
After wudu: Arabic testimony
Ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh.
Meaning in simple English: I affirm that Allah alone deserves worship, without any partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. This explanatory wording is a learning paraphrase; the Arabic text is the recitation.
Understand the reference
Sahih Muslim 234a records this testimony after completing ablution well. This page focuses on that wording so the reference and the text stay easy to check. Longer collections may list additional supplications with their own sources and discussions of transmission; an addition should be checked under its own reference rather than attributed automatically to this same narration.
Learn it in three manageable parts
- Read the first statement of testimony slowly with a teacher.
- Add the phrase affirming that Allah has no partner.
- Add the testimony concerning Muhammad, then join the parts together.
Use the transliteration as temporary support. English letters cannot accurately represent every Arabic sound. Listen through the source’s available reading aids or ask a teacher to model the wording; this page does not present a recording as if QuranCrest produced it.
Build it into the real routine
Practise after an ordinary wudu instead of setting an invented number of repetitions with a promised result. One learner can point to each phrase while another recalls its meaning. When washing and recitation are learned separately, a missed word is less likely to make a beginner repeat the entire washing unnecessarily.
In a combined bathroom and toilet space, ask how to observe remembrance etiquette for that arrangement. A private thought and spoken recitation are different actions. The wudu method guide explains the four Hanafi obligations; this page teaches the accompanying words.
Common questions
Does forgetting the dua invalidate wudu?
No. Forgetting this after-wudu remembrance does not itself undo the completed washing.
Is transliteration the same as Arabic pronunciation?
No. It is a reading aid with limits. Have a teacher hear the Arabic rather than assuming English letters reproduce every sound.
Why is only one after-wudu wording shown here?
This page teaches the testimony with its direct Sahih Muslim reference. Additional phrases should be studied with their own references and transmission details.
